As a painter & decorator, there’s nothing more frustrating than having to spend extra time cleaning brushes and rollers or discovering they’ve dried out overnight. Fortunately, with a few smart techniques, you can keep your tools in top condition and ready for the next session—saving time, money, and effort.
Here are some practical ways to wrap up your brushes and rollers at the end of the day:
1. The Plastic Wrap Method
For short-term storage (overnight or a day or two):
Wrap the brush or roller in cling film/plastic wrap tightly.
Ensure the wrap completely covers the bristles or roller nap to prevent air exposure.
Store in a cool, dry place. This method works well for water-based paints and is quick for busy painters who want to pick up where they left off.
2. Use a Brush or Roller Keeper
Commercially available brush and roller keepers are a professional favourite.
These airtight containers allow you to store brushes and rollers without worrying about them drying out.
Simply insert the brush or roller into the keeper, seal it, and it’s ready for the next day.
3. Foil or Plastic Bag Wrap
Aluminium foil works brilliantly for overnight storage. Wrap the brush or roller tightly, then store in a cool area.
Plastic sandwich bags can also do the trick—especially for rollers. Remove as much air as possible before sealing.
4. Wet Storage in Water or Solvent
For water-based paints, submerge brushes or rollers in water. Make sure the bristles or roller nap are completely covered.
For oil-based paints, use the appropriate solvent (like white spirit) for short-term storage.
Tip: Avoid leaving brushes or rollers in water or solvent for long periods, as this can damage the handle or the bristles.
5. Hang Them Up
Some decorators hang brushes and rollers vertically, with the bristles or roller nap wrapped in a bag or cling film.
This prevents flattening of the bristles or deformation of the roller and keeps them clean.
Quick Tips:
Label wrapped brushes or rollers if using multiple colours to avoid mix-ups.
Never leave paint to dry on your brushes or rollers overnight—it’s much harder to clean and may ruin the tool.
For rollers, using a roller cage inside a bag or wrap helps keep the shape intact.
By taking a few minutes at the end of the day to wrap up your brushes and rollers, you can dramatically extend their lifespan, reduce cleaning time, and ensure your next painting session starts smoothly.
